The Changwon Studio

29th September, 2022

Over the last 2 weeks I've been working on site at the Changwon Sculpture Biennale. The basement of the exhibition hall has been turned into a studio for a group of international artists. Sourcing all the materials locally I've created a number of inflated works, from paper forms to flying hair dryer works.

The studio was a kitchen at some point. The large walk in freezer turns out to be a great room to do the resin work on the paper forms.

There were other large halls that I temporarily took over to cut 8m long sheets of plastic to create the work, In winter I will fly. This is the large balloon and hair dryer work that I previously explored in Scotland. In South Korea this work had to be re-imagined. The air temperature is around 30 degrees, much warmed than Scotland. This means the balloon form has to be much larger. A 8m high form just allows the hair dryer to fly in Changwon.

The digital artwork Standard Strings has been further developed over the last two weeks in order to incorporate it into the installation Standard Strings and Uncertain Circles. The installation version is different from the website, but similar. The code has been adjusted in order to run the work on a Raspberry Pi that can be hidden alongside a projector within a pile of inflated paper forms (Uncertain Circles). It is important that the digital work is live code, not a video loop. The Raspberry Pi, mini-computer, constantly generates new forms, projected from within the pile of inflated paper forms.
