Cosmic Titans: Art, Science and the Quantum Universe

I am excited to announce the opening of ‘Cosmic Titans: Art, Science and the Quantum Universe’ at the Nottingham Lakeside Arts University @lakesidearts. The show opens to the public on Saturday 25th January 2025.

Over the last year I have undertaken a residency at the Gravity Lab at Nottingham University. Working alongside a group of scientists I have created an installation titled “An Early Universe”, offering a glimpse into the first moments after the Big Bang, recreating the extreme dynamics when waves and oscillations shaped the cosmos. The rippling water at the heart of the installation serves as an analogue for the early universe. In an accompanying wall-hung sculpture, time is frozen, the glossy black form of a 3D scan of the water’s vibrating surface captures a fleeting moment of fluid motion, providing a tangible record of patterns too rapid to perceive.

The exhibition contains new commissions by artists who have each spent time working alongside world-leading researchers in quantum physics. The other artists include Conrad Shawcross, Matthew Woodham, Monica LoCascio, Daniela Brill Estrada, David Severn, Jim Grainger and Studio Above & Below.

Silke Weinfurtner who leads the lab and Ulrike Kuchner who’s crossover art-science work and artistic lead on this project, alongside Lina Jansson’s guidance on art and philosophy were all hugely helpful. Many of the scientists at the Gravity Lab offered direct help: both Vitor Barroso and Maciej Jarema’s expertise on the related science and the experiments they are developing served as a strong background for my research and experimentation. The 3D imaging of the water’s surface could not have been done without the innovative techniques that Vitor Barroso is developing.
