An Uncertain Toroid

2021
stainless steel
150cm x 150cm x 70cm (w x d x h)

An Uncertain Toroid is a generative sculpture created in stainless steel. The final form is uncertain, two sheets of steel are welded together, then inflated with high pressure air forming a steel torus.

The toroidal form of the final work reflects the torus in a nuclear fission reactor, the work was first created in response to an exhibition funded by EUROfusion, a body that brings together nuclear fusion research across Europe, Switzerland, Norway and the UK.

The stresses in the steel as the piece inflates from a near 2 dimensional form into the 3 dimensional torus create a completely unpredictable final form.
