15, 450 milligrams of the Evian mountain

Friday, March 3rd, 2006

If you saw the show 6, 180 milligrams of the Evian mountain and were wondering why the name has changed in my portfolio - well this is why:

Its part of an ongoing project that started at HAL (see it here in the portfolio) where i boiled Evian away as part of an installation. When the show at Reception Space was named I envisaged that 20 litres of Evian water was the maximum I would be able to boil by the time the show started. However, I refined my evapouration technique and managed to get 50 litres boiled away.

It was too late to rename the show at the time, and conceptually it wasn’t too much of an issue, but I felt that I wanted the exact amount in the online portfolio - so i’ve renamed it.

Residency at Hull Art Lab

Friday, August 19th, 2005

Between July 25 and August 21 I was the artist in residence at the Hull Art Lab in Hull. HAL gave me the opportunity to do whatever I wanted in a huge warehouse for a month and let me present the work in any way, or timescale. This freedom, soon after my degree show was amazingly refreshing, and the open structure of my residency stood in complete contrast to my recent crazy degree show experiece (a productive - but stressful one).

This atmosphere allowed me to work on something that had occured to me before my degree show, a project involving mineral water and mountains. It was something that needed a quieter atmosphere than the Royal College and a good amount of time mucking about on my own. I spent the month playing with tin foil, buying a huge variety of high pressure water irrigation systems and soaking the hell out of the warehouse (that was another cool thing about this place - they weren’t prescious) and routing lots of plaster board. The end results are here.
